What a Solar Panel Installation Gives You
A solar PV system turns daylight into electricity you can use in your home. Panels on your roof produce direct current, an inverter converts it into the alternating current your appliances use, and anything you do not use at that moment can be stored in a battery or exported to the grid. The more of your own power you use, the less you need to buy from your supplier.
Solar is a strong fit for homeowners who are tired of rising electricity bills, who are at home during the day or want to add a battery, who drive or plan to buy an electric car, or who simply want more control over where their energy comes from. It also suits landlords and property owners who want to improve a building's running costs.
Solar may be worth considering alongside planned roof work or changes to your electricity use. Suitability and costs depend on your property and requirements.
Professional installation matters because a solar system is both roof work and electrical work. Panels have to be fixed securely to your roof structure and kept weatherproof, while the electrical side has to be safe, compliant and correctly sized. Sam Hayes brings 25 years in construction and 12 years specialising in solar to both halves of the job, and the business is MCS certified and NAPIT registered.
What to Consider Before Installing Solar
Compare system suitability, installation costs and likely generation before deciding whether solar is right for your property.
You keep paying full price for every unit
Without your own generation, every kettle, wash load and evening of TV is charged at your supplier's rate. Costs depend on your tariff and usage.
Poor fixing leads to roof damage
Incorrectly fitted brackets or broken tiles can let water in. Leaks under panels often go unnoticed until damage shows inside, which makes repairs bigger and more expensive.
Undersized or oversized systems
A system that is too small leaves savings on the table. One that is badly matched to your inverter or usage costs more than it needs to and may underperform.
Paperwork that is not in order
Without proper certification and the right documentation, you can struggle when you sell your home or want to claim export payments from an energy supplier.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Choosing purely on the lowest headline price without checking accreditation.
- Buying a fixed package that ignores your roof, shading and how you use energy.
- Not planning for a battery or EV charger, then paying for rework later.
- Using an installer who is not MCS certified, which can affect export payments.

Solar PV Installation in Detail
Understanding the parts of a system helps you compare quotes properly and know what you are paying for.
Panels and mounting
Solar panels are mounted on rails fixed to your roof structure with brackets that sit beneath the tiles or slates. The fixing method depends on your roof covering, whether that is concrete tiles, clay tiles or natural slate, all of which are common across Barry, Cardiff and the valleys. Fixings must suit the roof covering and condition, with weatherproofing considered as part of the installation.
Panel layout is planned around the usable roof area, its direction and any shading from chimneys, trees or neighbouring buildings. South-facing roofs generate the most, but east and west roofs can still work well, particularly for households that use more power in the morning or evening.
Inverters
The inverter is the heart of the system, converting the panels' output into usable electricity. We primarily install Fox inverters, which can also manage battery storage. A compatible hybrid inverter may simplify adding a battery later; suitability and costs depend on the equipment.
Adding battery storage
Panels produce most in the middle of the day, when many homes use the least. A battery stores that surplus for the evening. We mainly fit Fox batteries, and can install one at the same time as your panels or add one to your system later. See our battery installation page for more detail.
Residential and commercial installs
Domestic systems are designed around a household's daily pattern of use. Commercial systems for business premises tend to be larger and are sized around daytime working hours, when a business uses most of its electricity. We install both, and each is quoted individually.
When roof work is planned
If you are having your roof repaired or replaced, it is often the best moment to fit solar. If panels are already installed and need to come off for roof work, we also offer panel removal and refitting.
Export payments
Electricity you do not use or store can be exported to the grid. Many energy suppliers pay for exported power through tariffs under the Smart Export Guarantee, and they typically require an MCS certified installation. Eligibility, metering and documentation requirements vary by supplier; check your chosen tariff before relying on export payments.
