Why a Dedicated Home Charger Is Worth It

A home EV charger is a dedicated wall-mounted unit that charges your electric car safely and faster than a standard plug socket. It is wired on its own circuit and designed for the sustained high load that car charging puts on your electrics.

It suits anyone who owns or is about to buy an electric or plug-in hybrid car and has off-street parking, such as a driveway or garage. It is also a natural next step for homeowners with solar panels, because a car is one of the largest single uses of electricity in a home.

The best time to install is before or as your new car arrives, so you are not relying on public chargers or a domestic socket. If you are planning solar or a battery as well, installing together lets everything be planned as one system.

EV charging is a continuous, heavy electrical load. It needs a correctly protected circuit and a professional installation. Complete Solar Services Ltd is NAPIT registered and carries £2m public liability insurance, and our solar experience means we can plan charging around your generation.

The Cost of Charging the Wrong Way

Charging from an ordinary socket or relying on public chargers costs time, money and, in some cases, safety.

Slow charging from a plug

Charging from a standard socket is usually slower. Use only a suitable manufacturer-approved arrangement and seek electrical advice; do not use extension leads.

Public charging costs

Relying on public chargers is usually more expensive and less convenient than charging at home.

Overloaded electrics

Adding a big new load without checking your supply can overload circuits and trip protection.

Wasted solar

Without planning, you charge from the grid at night while your panels export power during the day.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Using extension leads to charge from a household socket.
  • Fitting a charger without checking the home's supply and consumer unit.
  • Installing solar and a charger separately without planning them together.
  • Siting the charger where the cable will not comfortably reach the car.

Home EV Charging in Detail

A few decisions shape how well your charger works day to day.

Tethered and untethered chargers

A tethered charger has the cable permanently attached, so you just unhook it and plug in. An untethered charger has a socket, and you use your own cable. Tethered is more convenient for daily use; untethered gives a neater look and flexibility for different vehicles.

Your electrical supply

Car charging draws a large current for hours at a time. Before installing, we check your incoming supply and consumer unit to make sure your home can take the extra load alongside everything else you use.

Charging from solar

Some chargers can prioritise surplus solar power, charging the car when your panels are producing more than the house is using. With compatible equipment, this may increase how much of your own generation you use. We can advise on how best to set up charging if you have solar or are planning it.

Charger location

The charger should be positioned where the cable reaches the car's charging port comfortably, without trailing across paths. External units are weatherproof, but location still affects convenience and cable routing.

Business premises

Charging for staff or business vehicles is assessed individually, as requirements differ from a single domestic charger.

Smart charging

Most modern home chargers are smart chargers, controlled through an app. They let you schedule charging, track how much energy goes into the car and, with the right setup, prioritise surplus solar. Scheduling is useful if your electricity tariff has cheaper periods.

Charging and the rest of your home

A car can draw more power than almost anything else in the house. Some chargers can reduce their charging rate automatically when the rest of the home is using a lot, protecting your supply. We will talk you through what suits your property.

Who home charging suits best

Home charging works best for drivers who park off the road overnight and cover regular daily mileage, such as commuting or school runs. Home charging may reduce reliance on public chargers, depending on mileage, charger output and the time available. For households with solar panels, it also turns your roof into a source of fuel for the car, which is one of the most direct ways to use more of the power you generate.

If you have more than one electric vehicle, or plan to, mention it when you enquire, as it affects the charger choice and how your supply is managed.
