Why a Fox Battery Changes How You Use Solar

Solar panels produce most of their power in the middle of the day. For many households, that is exactly when the least electricity is being used. Without storage, that surplus is exported to the grid and you then buy power back in the evening when the kettle, oven and lights are on.

A battery stores that daytime surplus so you can use it later. The result is that more of the electricity your panels make is used in your own home, and less is bought from your supplier.

A battery suits homeowners who already have solar panels and see a lot of power exported, families who are out during the day and use most of their power in the evening, and anyone planning a new solar installation who wants to get the most from it from day one.

Complete Solar Services Ltd primarily installs Fox batteries and inverters. Fox is the primary brand we work with; equipment choice depends on your system and requirements. Battery work involves high-capacity electrical equipment, so it should always be fitted by a qualified, registered installer. We are NAPIT registered and MCS certified.

What You Lose Without Storage

If your panels are working but your bills have not dropped as much as you hoped, a lack of storage is often the reason.

Import and export tariff differences

Power you do not use at the time leaves your home, and any electricity bought later is charged under your import tariff. The difference depends on your import and export rates.

Evening peaks stay expensive

Most homes use the most electricity after work. Without a battery, all of that comes from the grid.

Mismatched equipment

A battery that is not compatible with your inverter, or is set up poorly, may not charge or discharge when it should.

Unsafe installation

Batteries store a lot of energy. Poor positioning or wiring creates real safety risks.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Buying a battery without checking it works with the existing inverter.
  • Choosing a capacity that does not match how much surplus the panels produce.
  • Siting the battery somewhere unsuitable to save time on installation.
  • Leaving settings on default instead of configuring them for the household.

Battery Storage in Detail

A few key choices decide how well a battery performs in your home.

Hybrid and AC-coupled setups

Batteries connect to a solar system in one of two broad ways. With a hybrid inverter, the panels and the battery share one inverter that manages both. With an AC-coupled setup, the battery has its own inverter and works alongside an existing solar inverter. Which suits you depends on what you already have installed. If your current inverter is ageing, replacing it with a Fox hybrid inverter at the same time can be the tidier option.

Choosing capacity

Battery size should match how much surplus your panels typically produce and how much you use in the evening. A battery much larger than your surplus will rarely fill up, while one too small will be empty before the evening ends. We size it from your system and your usage, not a standard package.

Where the battery goes

Batteries need a suitable location that keeps them within their operating conditions and allows safe access and cabling. Location must follow current safety guidance and manufacturer requirements; not every garage, room or outdoor space is suitable. We will advise on the right spot during your quote.

Adding to an existing system

Battery storage can be considered for existing panels, including installations fitted by another company. We check compatibility first so you do not end up with equipment that will not talk to each other.

Commercial storage

Businesses with solar can also use storage to cover use outside the sunniest hours. Commercial systems are assessed and quoted individually.

Getting the settings right

A battery is only as good as the way it is set up. Charge and discharge settings decide when the battery fills, when it powers the house and how much it keeps in reserve. We configure your Fox system around how your household uses energy and explain the settings at handover, so you are not left with factory defaults.

Batteries and EV charging

If you have or are planning an electric car, think about the battery and charger together. Planning both at once helps you decide how much of your stored solar goes to the house and how much to the car.

The business is MCS certified, TrustMark endorsed, RECC approved and NAPIT registered. MCS is the recognised standard for small-scale renewable installations in the UK.
