When Panels Need to Come Off
Solar panels sit on top of your roof covering. If the roof needs repairs, re-tiling, re-felting or full replacement, the panels and mounting usually need to be removed first, then refitted once the roof work is finished.
It suits homeowners and businesses who need roof work beneath their panels, who are having building work such as an extension or loft conversion, or who need panels moved to a different part of the roof.
Plan removal as soon as roof work is scheduled, so it can be coordinated with your roofer and your system is not off for longer than necessary.
Removing panels means safely isolating a live DC system and handling the panels, mounting and cabling without damage. Refitting means making the fixings watertight on the new roof and recommissioning the electrics. Sam's 25 years in construction and 12 years in solar cover both sides.
What Goes Wrong Without Proper Removal
Taking panels off is not a job to hand to whoever is on the roof.
Electrical danger
Panels generate voltage whenever there is daylight. Disconnecting them incorrectly is dangerous.
Damaged panels and cabling
Careless handling can crack glass or damage connectors.
Leaks after refitting
Poorly refitted brackets can let water into a brand-new roof.
System that will not restart
Incorrect reconnection can leave the system faulty or unsafe.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Letting a roofer remove panels without solar knowledge.
- Not planning storage for panels during roof work.
- Not coordinating timing, leaving the system off for weeks.
- Refitting without testing the system afterwards.

Removal and Refitting in Detail
Each part of the job needs care.
Isolating the system
Before anything is removed, the system is safely isolated. Panels produce voltage whenever light reaches them, so this step matters for everyone on the roof.
Removal and storage
Panels, rails and brackets are removed carefully and kept safe while the roof work goes ahead. We will discuss storage arrangements with you when quoting.
Working with your roofer
Timing is everything. Removal and refitting timings depend on the roofing work, equipment condition and scheduling.
Refitting to the new roof
Brackets are refitted to suit the new roof covering, whether tiles or slate, and finished to keep it watertight. It can also be a good time to upgrade, such as replacing an ageing inverter or adding a battery.
Commercial roofs
Larger commercial arrays involve more planning and are quoted individually.
Moving panels to a different roof
Sometimes panels need relocating, for example after an extension or when shading has changed. Moving panels involves the same careful removal, plus planning the new layout and checking the inverter and cabling suit the new position.
Checking the system before refitting
While panels are off, it is a good opportunity to inspect them, their connectors and the mounting for wear. Any issues can be dealt with before everything goes back on the new roof, saving a second visit.
Keeping your paperwork in order
Keep the records of your original installation and any work done since. They are useful if you sell your home or need to deal with your energy supplier.
Residential and commercial jobs
On homes, removal and refitting is usually linked to re-roofing, repairs or an extension. On commercial premises, it may be part of larger building works and needs planning around how the business operates. Both require appropriate electrical isolation, careful handling and fixings suited to the roof.
With 25 years in construction, Sam understands how roof work is sequenced, which helps keep your system off for as short a time as possible.
