What Solar Servicing Covers and Why It Matters
Solar panels have no moving parts, which leads many people to assume they never need attention. In reality, a solar PV system includes panels, mounting, cabling, an inverter and often a battery, all exposed to weather, heat and time. Servicing checks that each part is working safely and as it should.
Servicing suits anyone who has had a system for a few years, has noticed generation figures slipping, has bought a home with panels already fitted, or simply wants to protect their investment. It is also sensible after severe weather.
Signs that a service is due include lower generation than in previous years, warning lights or error codes on the inverter, visible dirt, debris or bird activity on the panels, or monitoring that has stopped reporting.
Working on a solar system means working at height and with live DC electrics, which can be dangerous. A professional service is safer and more thorough. Complete Solar Services Ltd brings 12 years of solar experience and is NAPIT registered and MCS certified.
What Happens When a System Is Left Unchecked
Problems with solar systems tend to grow quietly. Many owners only notice when the savings have already disappeared.
Gradual loss of output
Dirt, shading from new growth and ageing components can steadily reduce generation without any obvious warning.
Electrical faults
Loose or damaged connections and cabling can cause faults and, in the worst cases, safety risks.
Inverter problems missed
An inverter fault can stop generation entirely. Without checks, it may run for weeks unnoticed.
Roof and fixing issues
Movement or damage around mounting points can lead to water getting in.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Assuming panels need no attention at all.
- Never checking the inverter display or monitoring app.
- Climbing onto the roof to clean or inspect panels yourself.
- Waiting until generation stops completely before calling anyone.

Solar Servicing in Detail
A thorough service looks at the whole system, not just the panels.
Panels and mounting
We look for physical damage, soiling, shading and any signs of movement at mounting points. On the coast around Barry, Porthcawl and Swansea, salt and wind can add to wear, while inland, tree growth and moss are common causes of shading and dirt.
Cabling and connections
DC cabling and connectors can degrade or work loose over time. We check them for damage and secure fitting, because faulty connections reduce output and can create safety risks.
Inverter and monitoring
The inverter is checked for faults and error history, and we confirm it is converting power correctly. We also check your monitoring is reporting, so you can spot future problems yourself.
Batteries
Where a battery is fitted, we check it is charging and discharging as expected and that its settings suit how you use energy. We primarily work with Fox batteries and inverters.
Commercial systems
Business systems are usually larger and more costly when they underperform. Servicing for commercial premises is quoted individually.
After you buy a home with solar
Buying a property with panels already fitted often means inheriting a system with little paperwork and no history. A service tells you what you have, whether it is working properly and whether anything needs attention, so you can start getting the benefit straight away.
After storms and severe weather
High winds, heavy rain and storms can disturb mounting, cabling and roof coverings. If your area has had severe weather, a check may identify visible damage or faults.
Residential and commercial servicing
For homes, servicing assesses condition and can identify issues needing attention. For businesses, an underperforming system has a bigger financial impact because of its size and daytime demand. Commercial servicing looks at the same core components, scaled to the larger system, and is quoted individually.
Whatever the size of the system, the aim is the same: catch small problems early, keep the electrics safe and keep generation where it should be.

Solar PV Maintenance & Servicing FAQs

How much does a solar panel service cost?
+
It depends on the size and type of your system. Every job is quoted individually, so contact us for a price.
How often should solar panels be serviced?
+
It depends on your system and location. We can advise on a sensible interval after we have looked at your setup.
Do you service systems installed by other companies?

We offer servicing for existing systems, including those fitted by other installers. Contact us with your equipment details to confirm suitability.
Will you do any work without asking?

+
Cleaning is available as a separate service. See our solar panel cleaning page.
