What the Inverter Does and Why It Fails
Your solar panels produce direct current. Your home runs on alternating current. The inverter sits between the two, converting the power and managing how it flows into your home, your battery and the grid. If it stops working, your panels can be in full sun and you will still get nothing from them.
Inverters contain electronics that work hard every day, and they typically have a shorter working life than the panels themselves. That means many systems will need an inverter replacement at some point during their life, even when the panels are perfectly healthy.
You may need a replacement if your inverter shows a fault or error code, its display is blank, your generation figures have dropped to zero or close to it, or your monitoring app has stopped reporting. It is also worth considering when you want to add a battery and your existing inverter cannot support one.
Replacing an inverter is electrical work connected to both your panels and your home supply. It needs to be done safely and set up correctly. We primarily install Fox inverters and are NAPIT registered and MCS certified.
What a Failed Inverter Costs You
An inverter fault rarely fixes itself. The longer it is left, the more generation you lose.
Zero generation
With no working inverter, your panels produce no usable power, and you buy everything from the grid.
Lost export income
If you are paid for exported electricity, a failed inverter stops that too.
Hidden partial faults
Some inverters keep running but underperform, so the loss goes unnoticed for months.
Repeat failures
Replacing like-for-like without checking why it failed can leave the underlying issue in place.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Ignoring an error light because the panels look fine.
- Not checking generation figures, so a fault runs for months.
- Fitting a replacement that cannot support a battery you want later.
- Assuming the panels are at fault when the inverter is the problem.
How the Job Works
1
Enquiry
Tell us what you are seeing: error codes, a blank display or low generation.

Inverter Replacement in Detail
Not every replacement is the same. The right choice depends on your system and plans.
String and hybrid inverters
A standard string inverter converts power from your panels for use in your home. A hybrid inverter does the same but can also manage a battery. If you are replacing a failed string inverter and think you may want storage in the future, a compatible Fox hybrid inverter may be worth considering.
Matching the inverter to your panels
The inverter needs to be correctly sized for your array. Too small and it limits what your panels can deliver; poorly matched and it may not operate efficiently. We check your array before recommending a replacement.
Systems fitted by other companies
Replacement can be considered for systems fitted by other installers, subject to assessment and compatibility. We assess the existing setup, confirm what is needed and replace the inverter with a Fox unit.
Monitoring
Modern inverters usually include monitoring so you can see what your system is generating. Keeping an eye on it is the easiest way to spot a future fault early, before it costs you weeks of lost generation.
Commercial inverters
Commercial solar systems can use larger or multiple inverters. Replacements for business premises are assessed and quoted individually.
Signs your inverter is on its way out
Not every inverter fails overnight. Warning signs include frequent restarts, intermittent error codes, unusual noise or heat, generation that drops on bright days, and monitoring that keeps dropping out. If you notice any of these, an assessment may help identify the cause.
What happens to the old inverter
When we replace an inverter, the old unit is disconnected and removed, and the new Fox inverter is mounted, wired and set up. Testing establishes whether it is operating and whether further work is needed.
Residential and commercial differences
Domestic systems usually have a single inverter serving the whole array, so when it fails, generation stops completely. Larger commercial systems may have several inverters, which means a single failure reduces output rather than stopping it, and it can go unnoticed for longer. In both cases, keeping an eye on monitoring is the quickest way to spot a problem.

Our Solar and Construction Experience
Complete Solar Services Ltd was set up by Sam Hayes about three years ago. Sam has 12 years specialising in solar and 25 years in the construction industry. Each fox inverter replacement job needs assessment of the relevant roof and electrical requirements.
The business is MCS certified, TrustMark endorsed, RECC approved and NAPIT registered. MCS is the recognised standard for small-scale renewable installations in the UK. TrustMark is the government-endorsed quality scheme for work in and around the home. RECC is a consumer code for renewable energy, and NAPIT registration covers the electrical side. We also carry £2m public liability insurance.
We primarily work with Fox batteries and inverters. Each job is quoted individually, with a 2-year workmanship warranty on our work. Any additional faults or upgrade options should be assessed and included in the agreed scope before work proceeds. System suitability, the work involved and visit arrangements depend on your property.

Fox Inverter Replacement FAQs
Still have a question? Call Sam Hayes on 07301 504889.
How much does a solar inverter replacement cost?
+
It depends on the inverter needed for your system and whether you want battery capability. Every job is quoted individually.
How do I know my inverter has failed?
+
Common signs include error codes, a blank display, generation dropping to zero or monitoring that has stopped reporting. Call us and we will help you check.
Can you replace an inverter another company fitted?
+
Yes. We assess the existing system and replace it with a suitable Fox inverter.
Should I get a hybrid inverter?
+
If you may want a battery in the future, a compatible hybrid inverter may allow storage to be added later. We will advise based on your plans.
How long does an inverter replacement take?
+
We will confirm the expected timescale with your quote once we know your system.
Is it worth repairing my old inverter instead of replacing it?
+
Some faults are not in the inverter at all, which is why we diagnose first. Where the inverter itself has failed, replacement options depend on the system, fault and equipment compatibility. We will explain the options before any work goes ahead.
Do you replace inverters in Newport, Swansea and Bristol?
+
Yes. We cover Barry, Cardiff, Newport, Swansea, Porthcawl, Rhondda Cynon Taf, Brecon, Bristol, Bath, Gloucester and Hereford.
